A Nod To Modern-Day Mathematicians

In our most recent blog post, we paid homage to just a handful of the great mathematicians who have made significant contributions to the world, and from which we still find ourselves benefiting from today. You can read more here.

In this post, we will be introducing you to who we believe are some of the most brilliant minds and influential people in the world of Mathematics today, in a nod to modern-day mathematicians.

  1. Sir Roger Penrose

The Emeritus Rouse Ball Professor of Mathematics at the prestigious University of Oxford. In his time he has published a series of books contributing to the field of Mathematics but is also known for his work with the famous Stephen Hawking.

  1. Terence Tao

Terence Tao is an Australian born American who has worked in many different fields within Mathematics. He currently works at UCLA (University of California, Los Angeles) as a Professor of Mathematics. His interests vary across many different aspects of math, such as harmonic analysis, PDE, geometric combinatorics, arithmetic combinatorics, analytic number theory, compressed sensing, and algebraic combinatorics

  1. John Conway

Another mathematician on our list working at one of the best schools in the USA, Princeton University. John Conway is an English mathematician. Author of many mathematics books and also noted as the inventor of the Game of Life.

  1. John Milnor

Professor of Mathematics and Co-Director of the Institute for Mathematical Sciences at Stony Brook University. Recipient of the sought-after Fields Medal for his work in the field of differential topology.

  1. John Baez

Currently working in the field of the mathematics of fundamental physics as a Professor of mathematics at the University of California, although he is spending two years at the Centre for Quantum Technologies in Singapore. For almost 17 years he wrote a popular column where he would discuss a number of topics such as math, physics, biology and many more.

6. Maryam Mirzakhani

Maryam Mirzakhani is an Iranian mathematician who became the first woman and the first Iranian to be awarded a Fields Medal in 2014. The citation for her award recognized “her outstanding contributions to the dynamics and geometry of Riemann surfaces and their moduli spaces.”

Mirzakhani earned a Ph.D. from Harvard University for her dissertation Simple Geodesics on Hyperbolic Surfaces and Volume of the Moduli Space of Curves. In 2008 she became a professor at Stanford University.

Once again, these are but a handful of the exceptional minds developing the world of mathematics today. There are loads more out there and we want to know who belongs on your list of great modern-day mathematicians. Let us know your thoughts in the comments below..
